The Wieliczka Tourist Route

The Tourist Route is the standard visit and the one nearly every tour from Kraków books. It is about 3.5 kilometres long, takes two to three hours, and reaches a maximum depth of 135 metres. Here is what that actually consists of.

The descent — 380 steps

You enter at the Daniłowicz shaft and walk down a timber staircase inside it. The mine’s figure is about 380 steps; operators commonly say 350. It is enclosed, well lit, and relentlessly downward — the only physically demanding stretch of the visit, and it is over in ten minutes or so. It lands you at roughly 64 metres below the surface.

The galleries

From there the route threads horizontally through timber-braced tunnels, dropping level by level. What you are walking through is not decorated rock — it is rock salt, grey-green and glassy where it has been polished by centuries of hands. Guides encourage you to taste the walls, and everybody does.

Along the way: chambers propped with vast pine cribbing, underground brine lakes still and green under the lights, and a long series of tableaux carved by miners — figures, reliefs and scenes cut from salt, including a well-known depiction of the legend of Princess Kinga and her ring.

St. Kinga’s Chapel

The centrepiece, about 101 metres down: a complete church hollowed out of a single chamber. The chandeliers are salt crystal. The altarpieces, the wall reliefs — including a salt-carved rendering of The Last Supper — and even the patterned floor tiles are cut from rock salt. It is still consecrated, still used for Mass and weddings, and it is genuinely startling the first time you walk in.

Back to the surface

You do not climb the 380 steps again — a lift takes you up in a couple of minutes. Total time underground is two to three hours, and toilets sit at roughly the 40- and 90-minute marks along the route.

The other routes

• Miners’ Route — a hands-on expedition with lanterns and overalls where you play at being a novice miner; open 09:00–17:00, a different ticket, and generally booked separately.
• Pilgrims’ Route — a religious-themed route with roughly the same 800 stairs.

Nearly every Kraków day-tour on the market covers the Tourist Route; if you specifically want the Miners’ Route, check the listing carefully, because most do not include it. One operator names the Tourist Route explicitly in its title.
