Wieliczka Salt Mine: What to Expect

Everything below comes from the mine’s own visitor information or from the operators’ listings. It is the small print that decides whether your visit is comfortable.

Stairs — about 800, and 380 of them at once

Roughly 800 steps in total. About 380 of those come immediately, descending the Daniłowicz shaft (operators often say 350). All of it is downward — you return by lift, not on foot. The remainder is spread in short flights between chambers over 3.5 kilometres.

Temperature — the sources disagree, so bring a layer

The mine’s own information says 17–18 °C. Every operator selling tickets says 14–16 °C. We are not going to pretend to resolve that: dress for the mid-teens and you will be right either way. You are underground for two to three hours and it does not warm up.

Footwear

Comfortable closed shoes, and this matters more than the jacket. The surfaces are uneven salt, timber and stone, occasionally damp.

Luggage — hand-size only

The mine’s stated maximum is 20 × 20 × 35 cm; operators quote 30 × 20 × 10 cm or 35 × 20 × 20 cm. Take the strictest reading and leave anything bigger on the bus or at your hotel. If you are arriving straight from the airport this genuinely matters.

Photography

Allowed — the mine confirms photos and filming are permitted. One operator lists a 10 PLN photo permit payable on the spot, so carry a little cash.

Toilets

Positioned along the route at roughly the 40-minute and 90-minute marks. There are none between, and you cannot leave the group.

Accessibility

Parts of the Tourist Route are adapted for people with limited mobility, but this must be arranged with the mine by email in advance — it is not something to turn up and request. Note also that the standard route begins with the shaft staircase.

Claustrophobia

Worth being straight about: the chambers are enormous — St. Kinga’s Chapel is the size of a church — and the galleries are wide and well lit, so most people who worry about this are fine. What you cannot do is leave early: you are with a group, deep underground, for two to three hours.

Children

The route is popular with families and the salt-carved tableaux hold children’s attention. But: no discount (the 169 PLN gate price applies to everyone), 380 steps at the start, and a two-to-three-hour walk at the guide’s pace. One operator asks to be told in advance if a child is under 150 cm so a car seat can be arranged for the transfer.

Food

Excluded from every tour on this page. There is a restaurant underground, and a chance to buy something at the end.
